Long black at Gallery Cafe

It should not be as hard as it is to find a place that makes a chicken sandwich with a decent amount of chicken on it. Unfortunatly it is. Gallery Cafe does make a decent chicken sandwich. Their coffee is not much to talk about, and they are typical of most other cafes based in Westfield Chermside shopping centre.

The cafe is located opposite Borders, just outside of David jones, and has some of the oddest and least comfortable clear plastic chairs.

Ekka with a long black

The Ekka has been and gone, and I was there on Peoples day, the busiest day of all. There was a lot of fun to be had that day. Elbowing through the showbag pavilion packed with too many people. Watching stubborn sheep not doing much at all at the sheep dog trials and a number of other farm animals, alive and as meat.

In all of this chaos I did manage to find a cup of coffee and a mushroom and steak sandwich in the Woolworths fresh food pavilion. It was locally produced and served in a branded cup. It was not too bad, but I did not find myself buying a bag of beans afterwards.

I did end up with some DBZ figures, both a Bulls and a Darrell Lee showbag, a clock, an audio pig, a firewoman calendar and a selection of cheeses.

Long black at Nero Espresso

Wavell Heights has changed a little since the 1990’s. The housing prices have gone up, and the shops on the corner of Rode and Pfingst Road keep on changing. The bakery with their much loved pies and croissants is still there next to the Chinese takeaway, but across the road there is now a beauty parlour, a hairdresser and a new cafe, Nero Espresso.

Nero Espresso does a nice breakfast; I am rather fond of the egg and bacon sandwich. The cafe feels cosy and the decor is done in warm browns and reds with a well done feature wall. A box of children’s toys and a dogs’ water bowl by the door sit well with its laid-back, suburban feel.

The coffee does stand out a lot more in my mind though. Nero Espresso make a strong long black using a locally roasted bean called Velocity, done by Octane Coffee Co. I had mine with a single sugar, and I found it had a nice, strong, slightly rough flavour. It was good made at home with a stovetop percolator too.

Nero Espresso is one of a number of new cafes opening up in Wavell Heights and the surrounding area. As housing prices go up, and the demographics of the area change, there will inevitably be more coffee, and dinning options locally.

Long black at Identity Hair

Finally, I had booked myself in for a haircut. I had managed to get an early Saturday morning booking at Identity Hair with Vass.

I arrived early for my appointment to what turned out to be a completely redone salon. The place had all but been rebuilt. It is worth checking out their site, though be warned gaming, there is an audio loop.

The coffee was decent, and I had it with one sugar. I did not remember to ask what beans they were using these days while I was there. It was complemented by the small biscuit it was LoL served with. Half covered with chocolate, it worked great with the coffee.
